It is a good book for those with a military or fantasy mind.

Lots of explanations. Lots of world-building. Not my favorite, but a decent read.

Fun and entertaining. Along the lines of Lord of the Rings "befoe" the popularity of style. Great weekend read.

Though this book started with an original idea for the magic, which is the wishsong, so many other aspects of the story were reruns of the first two books. I found myself constantly growing bored, there was not enough suspense to get me going. With that said, i'm sure I would have felt differently if I had read this book 4 years ago. There were plenty of lovely twists for the reader whose unacquainted with Shannara. Since I've read Heritage of Shannara I wasn't in complete suspense. But there were other reasons for my lagging interest.

The characters were stock. No real development of character in either Brin or Jair. I found myself growing increasingly impatient with Brin's attitude. It seemed that Brooks found Jair's character to be more interesting yet still he did not develop him enough. Jair's companions are practically 2D as we don't get any character development/exposition on them either. Not enough dialogue, too much rumination/doubt/indecision for Jair and Brin, but especially for Brin. I found Brooks used far too many words in between events which really slows down the pace of the book. He continues to heavily use the passive tense as he did in the previous books. The sentences are too long again slowing the pace of the novel.

I really enjoyed the scenes at the Hadeshorn, the Grimpond, and all of the Maelmord. The Maelmord scene is Brooks at his best. He does a great job with such awesome confrontations, but I found myself waiting too long for it.

The character of Slanter and Cogline were much needed comic relief to the dreary ruminations of Brin and the often stumbling Jair. Slanter was really the one with the most character with Cogline a close second, perhaps even a tie with Slanter.

I'm glad I finished the book. I was tired of wading through all those words.

I hope if/when i read Heritage again, I enjoy it as much as I did the first time round.
