Excellent second novel in Robin Hobb's "Soldier Son" trilogy. I read the first one, "Shaman's Crossing", late last year, and while I enjoyed it, it wasn't really up to the standards of the author's previous novels. I mainly thought it was too repetitive --- she kept on making the same points...

Couldn't finish it. Just didn't like the main character enough to continue reading. Maybe I'll try again in the future

5 out of 5. Second of the Soldier's Son Trilogy. Not for the faint-of-heart, but if you can make it through, the final book is totally worth it. In this section Nevare recovers from the plague and returns home, only to continue to be victimized by the magic until he loses everything and is sent to an outpost in the back of beyond, where he is an outcast among outcasts, trying to maintain his humanity in the face of adversity.

Better than the first one of this series (more action). Much is explained that was left out of the first book.

This trilogy forces you to look at the other side of the conflict. By the end, I could not identify the enemy.

While I enjoyed the overall story, I found that I was confused with where Hobb was taking the story. It is clear that Nevare must suffer great loss to bind himself to the magic.

I am glad that Hobb isn't the author with the typical neat and tidy endings. I love that she forces her characters to mature with "tough love." If you think that all heroes should win the day with charm and grace, this book is not for you.

Like the character development, but I felt like I was waiting for something to REALLY happen for most of the book. Again, not nearly as attractive as her previous series - I will get the final book - but I'm not as hooked or engaged.

Is it just me, or is the lack of decision making of Nevare frustrating? I felt that if it weren't for the depth of the other characters and beautiful writing of Robin Hobb, it would have been a lot less interesting. I know not every book will make you dance in happiness, and life is filled with all people, but prevarication drives me nuts.
