Liked It1 of 1 members found this review helpful“I liked this novel--the author was "right on" about drugs in what for him was the future. But I have to admit it was odd and funny to read a story set in the 90's with 60's and 70's slang, gadgets and extinct objects ( i.e.,8-track tapes, phone booths, "far out", "foxy").” see full review » see other reviews » |

“Quite sad on reflection”

Dick detailing the effects of drugs on his life and of his friends, which really heightens the impact of the story of "A Scanner Darkly". The way Dick is able to describe paranoia - starting with the paragraphs of the first chapter - is uncanny, to say the least. One of the best novels by Dick.”

This book made the movie make sense. No, I take that back. This book enhances the mind trip of the more convienent-to-watch-than-read movie version.”

Its creepy depiction of the drug culture is a bit unnerving (in a good way) and the way it explores corruption among law enforcement officials can also warp your mind. 'Scanner' manages to be scarcastically funny, philosophically intuitive and psychologically frightening all at once. A must read.”

I hope PG does many more readings because he shows yet another side of his talents. He does the dialogue justice. I'm feeling a little bogged down at this point with this book. it doesn't seem to be going anywhere which is probably the point. Something about Dick's writings remind me of Charlie Kaufman's screenplays. I wonder if he was influenced by him. The whole idea of alternate realities and questioning what makes humans tick. I love reading Philip K. Dick because the writing is so clever and well done. It's all about the journey when you're reading PK Dick. ”
