Another delightful read from Simon Winchester. He seems to have a talent for capturing people and times and mingling them just so with the story of a world-changing development. A fascinating story, well written and (in the audio book) well read. Whether you've heard of William Smith or not, you will feel you know something about his life and work by the end of this book.

I have to give this 2 stars because historical fiction/non-fiction is SUCH a hard read for me. Very hard. But the subject matter is incredible. I wish they were easier.
