Setting & Locations edit see section history

The story takes place in New Dagonia, a city-state in the Thousand Kingdoms. The level of advancement present in the setting is roughly equivalent to contemporary first world nations on Earth. Technology is not the main source of advancement in the Thousand Kingdoms. Magic is.
  • Archstone: A ward in New Dagonia. Primarily an industrial and warehousing district, there are also some residential and shopping areas contained within it. The majority of the residents of the ward would be considered upper lower class to middle class. There are some exceptions above and below these thresholds, and there are quite a few homeless shelters in this ward. More than in others due to the relative safety of Archstone compared to wards like Kaid's Cross and Black Spit.
  • Kaid's Cross: A run-down ward in New Dagonia dominated by gang activity. The area is primarily residential and local business oriented. A lower middle class existence is about as good as it gets in Kaid's Cross. The majority are solidly lower class. The ward is also home to many enclaves of non-humans, which causes racially-oriented gangs to be more prevalent here than in any other ward within the city.

Organizations edit see section history

  • New Dagonian Police Department: The law enforcement agency responsible for keeping the peace in the city-state of New Dagonia. The NDPD has jurisdiction throughout the entire nation, and individual officers have it based on type and location of crime. For example, Homicide Unit officers have jurisdiction over all murders in the nation. Generally the central HU office located at Hammersmith watchtower takes all in-city cases, while smaller offices outside the city handle rural murders.

Glossary edit see section history

  • sigil: An item analogous to a police officer's badge in the real world. A sigil is a symbol of the authority of an individual.
  • wand: In the Dire Crimes universe a wand is the equivalent of a handgun. Wands can be manufactured to fire differing types of elemental magic. Ice, fire, earth, and electricity. Standard-issued NDPD wands are always ice, for minimal damage to objects while maintaining good damage to people.
  • carriage: A carriage (slang carry) is the equivalent to an automobile. Carries run on ley crystal drives, and are charged much like an electrical automobile is, via an umbilical to slow charge, or via a charge station to rapidly charge. A full charge for a carry at a charge station takes a bit less than five minutes to complete. Overnight charging is required for a standard umbilical.
