I realize it's pretty much a transition between early strictly sci-fi Heinlein and later Heinlein who became...what's the phrase "opulently liberal" and unabshedly hippie. In some of his later works his ideals clouded some of the stories but personally I think this...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“One of the first science fiction books. A lot of philosophizing. ”

The outside perspective, looking in, at our society? Great. More particularly, though, I love Dr. Jubal, even though I read it because I was told that I remind someone of Mike Smith... though, I have to recognize that, on some levels, I can see why they say that... oh well.”

What I found was that it was very anti-establishment, anti-religion and trying to put politics in its own place by being vey opinionated and arrogant.
There certainly were sections within this book that I thought were very well written and I liked his style enough that I continued reading other Heinlein books, but none reached the pinnacle that this book obviously was for Heinlein.
If you disagree with the whole world and how it is run, then this book might be of interest to you, but if you believe in God, then definitely avoid it.”
“Ahead of its time.”

The second half is just stupid. #1 it completely ignores human nature, #2 with endless funds and surrounded by geniuses limits become ridiculous #3 the idea that sexuality is the pinnacle of humanity goes against history and logic.
My eyes almost rolled out of my head.”
