Quick & Dirty: This is one of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. A magical world filled with amazing characters, beautiful heartfelt moments, epic romance, and an unforgettable story.
Opening Sentence: The shutters swinging in the storm winds were the only sign of her entry.
Celaena survived the horrible Salt Mines, to become a slave in a different way. She is now the king’s personal assassin, and she does his bidding without question, at least the king thinks she does. Instead of killing the king’s victims she is faking their deaths and letting them disappear. By doing this she is putting her life and all the lives of those she cares about in serious jeopardy, but she will not butcher innocent people. Her next victim is someone from her past that is part of a rebellion to unseat the king. She starts to wonder if there is hope that one day the people will be able to live freely without a tyrant for a king. Magic disappeared years ago from the land, but there are dark forces gathering and they are bringing a new type of magical power into play. Celaena’s entire world is in danger and she has to make a choice. Who and what is she willing to fight for?
Celaena is one of my favorite heroines ever created. She can kick some serious booty when she needs to and she has some killer instincts. But she also has a very kind and gentle side to her. She has had so much heartache in her life, but she still had hope that there is good worth fighting for. She has her faults as well, like being very selfish at times, but it makes her more relatable in that way. Most people in her profession have lost all sense of right and wrong; this is not the case for Celaena. She really tries to do what’s right and spare as many lives as she can. She is a loyal person and she would do anything for the few people she cares about. I love her self confidence, but she also has a lot of insecurities that make her human. Honestly, she is one of those characters I wish I could be more like.
Chaol seriously melted my heart and I fell completely in love with him. He is noble, attractive, kind, and just a good overall person. He tried to keep his distance from Celaena because he knew that falling for her would come with consequences, but you can’t help who you love. He challenges Celaena and gives her hope that there are still good things left in this world. Their romance was developed slowly and it was so beautifully done. There is great sexual tension between them, and so many cute stolen moments. Like everything in life, love is never easy, but it is worth fighting for. Their relationship has gone through so much but I hope that in the end they get a happy ending. So suffice to say, I am most definitely Team Chaol.
Dorian is an amazing guy as well. Of course he totally gorgeous and charming, but he has some big flaws as well. He is the Crown Prince and to his credit he is nothing like his father. He actually has a heart and really cares about people, but he is weak. He won’t stand up to his father because he is too afraid. He has a lot to learn and he grows up a lot in this book. I have really high hopes for Dorian and I think that he will make a great king eventually. He is still very much in love with Celaena, and they have a lot in common. I see Dorian as more of a friend right now, but a lot can happen between now and the end of the series.
It is actually hard to put into words how amazing this book is. Throne of Glass was an incredible book, and I had really high expectations for Crown of Midnight. Let’s just say that it really went above and beyond anything I had hoped for. There were so many unexpected moments that kept me excited and left me wanting to read more. I got so attached to the characters that I could literally feel their emotions when things would happen to them. At the beginning, there were moments that just made my heart melt into a gooey puddle, then all the sudden I felt like it was ripped from my chest and shredded into tiny pieces. Than just as things started to mend the books ends with a jaw dropping revelation that will leave readers begging for more. This book made me fall in love with reading all over again. It is one of those stories that just captivates and intrigues you the whole way through. I would highly recommend this series to anyone, especially if you like fantasy. Give it a try, you will be so glad you did.
The kiss obliterated her.
It was like coming home or being born or suddenly finding an entire half of herself that had been missing. His lips were hot and soft against hers—still tentative, and after a moment, he pulled back far enough to look into her eyes. She trembled with the need to touch him everywhere at once, to feel him touching her everywhere at once. He would give up everything to go with her.
She twined her arms around his neck, her mouth meeting his in a second kiss that knocked the world out from under her.
