Lucy stole her friend Rose’s ‘happily ever after’ because she wanted Rose’s husband and Lucy always gets what she wants. Big mistake. Rose was the ideal wife and is the ideal mother; Lucy was the perfect mistress. BUT: As Peter’s interest diminishes and Lucy’s domestic responsibilities...
Rose: Rose is a single mom who devotes her entire life to her twin boys, which doesn't leave much time for her to take care of herself. While she is a little hung up on the past, she is trying to make better changes for her future. She doesn't have the best self-esteem or confidence, but goes out of her way to make people happy. Rose always seems to do the right thing.
Lucy: Lucy is an extremely successfully business woman, but not the greatest mother. She often puts herself before those around her, and does not put a lot of time into getting to know her daughter. Lucy is very blunt in her judgement of others, and does not go out of her way to be pleasant to those she interacts with. Her scandalous past often follows her around, but she is good at ignoring the important things. Yet a single night ends up changing her entire way of life, and in the end Lucy does her best to reconcile her messy life.
Connie: Connie is a mutual friend to both Rose and Lucy. She is a devoted mother and loyal friend who constantly tries to make the best impression on others. Her past indiscretions have allowed her to embrace motherhood and her nearly perfect marriage, therefore she tries her best to help Rose find the same type of happiness. Though Connie can sometimes second guess herself, she always makes the right decisions for herself and her family.
Daisy: Daisy is Rose's younger sister. She is extremely loyal to Rose and helps her out with the boys whenever she can. Daisy's own desire for children lead her to be sad at some moments, but also help her acknowledge what she has. Like Connie, Daisy tries to help Rose find love and supports her in every way she can.
John Harding: John is an egotistical man who's first priority is finding someone to spend the night with. He's successful in business, but doesn't have the best relationships. He often does not understand his friends' desires to marry, and he doesn't like talking about his own failed marriage. Once John sets his sights on something he wants, he'll do anything he can to get it even if that means trouble for other people. Though quite shallow with women, John is a good friend and an understanding man when he needs to be.
Craig Walker: Craig is one of John's friends and the headmaster of the school where Rose, Lucy, and Connie's children go. He is very soft spoken and sensitive, which means he is extremely polite and friendly with all the characters he encounters. He simply wants to find love, but also lacks the self confidence to pursue the woman he likes. Yet once he opens up, he is very insightful and quite romantic.
Peter: Peter is Rose's ex-husband... and Lucy's current husband. He is quite self centered, and cares a lot about his money and his status. Though he isn't the most outgoing father, he is desperately in love with Lucy and does his best to keep his family happy.
Henry and Sebastian: These are Rose and Peter's twin boys. At this point in the book they are only seven years old, but they seem to understand their parents' situation. Like typically boys, they don't like the outward signs of affection their mother shows, and care more about their X-Box than anything else.
Auriol: Auriol is the daugher of Lucy and Peter. At only four years old, she is quite smart and very insightful. She is also very beautiful, and Lucy takes pride in her appearance. Yet like most four year olds, she is often temperamental and throws a fit when she doesn't get what she wants. At the end of the day all she really cares about is getting Lucy's attention, and will do anything she can to get it.
Luke: Connie's wonderful husband. He is extremely attentive and loving.
Mick: Mick is a younger associate that Lucy meets at her job. He is quite flirtatious, and seems to actively pursue Lucy. However he has very good intentions, and turns out to be a fantastic friend for Lucy when she needs it most.
Joe Whitehead: Joe is another one of Lucy's associates, but he is not well liked. After an awful office party, Joe stalks Lucy and causes a lot problems for her both professionally and personally. He is inappropriate, unattractive, and way too pushy for his own good.
“Last night it was easy to be angry and indignant and, most importantly, to continue to avoid what they were shunting into view. But in the daylight, with sun streaming through the window, it's not so easy to feign ignorance. I don't have a future.”
“Connie's words beat their way through the flowery privet fence that I have carefully built in my mind. It's a manicured fence, which I prune and nurture; a fence I've carefully constructed to keep me protected from harsh realities. But, like a nasty, invasive weed, the words of my friends hack through.”
