“Like any series, you'd do better if you read 2010 before 3001. In my opinion, you can enjoy 3001 without any prior reading of 2010 (or even 2001) but if you want to follow the story, reading 3001 before 2010 will spoil a lot of 2010's suspense and mystery.”
