Didn’t Like It“Urgh. I was told I'd like these books by several people, but to me they were just a normal questy fantasy story with some attempts at off-the-wall humor. Not my cup of tea.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“Another Fine Myth (1978) 200 pages by Robert Asprin.
Skeeve is an apprentice to the magician Garkin. Skeeve is contemplating how he can learn enough magic to be able to get away and use his magic to help him steal enough to get by. Into Garkin's house comes an assassin. The assassin manages to kill Garkin with a crossbow bolt, but at the same time Garkin has loosed a bolt of magical energy that kills the assassin. Moments later a fearsome, reptilian being appears. Skeeve is scared witless.
The newcomer is Aahz, from the planet Perv. Which makes him (no, not a pervert) a pervect. He is also a demon, but demon applies to anyone who is a dimension traveler. Aahz is also a master magician, a great friend of Garkin, but Garkin has played a practical joke on Aahz. He used a spell that stripped Aahz of his magical powers and being dead can't undo the spell. There is no way now for Aahz to return to Perv, so he take Skeeve on as his apprentice.
The first order of business is to find out who sent the assassin to kill Garkin and bring them to justice. Through deception, cunning, using the little magic that Skeeve knows, and enlisting the help of a few friends they manage to find the culprit.
There adventures take them to the Bazaar at Deva, where they meet up with Tananda (a trollop) and her brother Chumley (a troll). The book is packed with humor, and contains a fairly decent storyline, and as we are introduced to characters we get to see how they develop. None more than Skeeve. The books pretty much pick up where the last one left off. It's probably best to read them in order. ”
“I can not get enough of this series. They are a light, quick and witty read. ”

And the plots are of the 'Gee, how's he gonna get out of this one?' type. If they made a movie, it'd star Saturday Night Live cast members. Yet, for some reason I keep re-reading them, giggling over the same jokes.”

I had attempted the Shannara offerings from the very talented Terry Brooks, but couldn't get my head around ALL the intricate characters included in his sagas.
Then comes this little treat into our bedroom for a touch of quiet reading before bed for my spouse........NOT!!!!! He had to stop reading this before bed because he couldn't stop laughing! He had tears in his eyes and I couldn't understand what could be so blasted funny at that time of night. Well, he read aloud just a short passage, and the clever sarcasm that dripped from those words was SO much like the way we talk to each other when we're trying to make a certain point, that it was unreal! Now, I was laughing out loud and urging him to get the book finished quickly so I could read it too.
Thus began our love for Robert Aspirn and his quirky characters. He will be truly missed but we at least have his heart.”
“When I need a good laugh I pick up this series and enjoy myself.”
