Max the Wolf - who isn't a wolf, but a real boy - finds himself in the middle of an unfamiliar forest, in the company of a talking badger named Banderbrock. Max and Banderbrock soon get run over by a talking cat (or something of the sorts) called Mc Tavish and soon find out that the forest is not a friendly one at all.

The three fugitives band together to investigate the forest and it's mysteries as they try to avoid the Blue Cutters - the name given to the people hunting them. On their journey they meet up with Walden the bear, who is on his way to see Prince Aspen, known as an oracle, who will show them to safety ...
