I first read the Gormenghast books in the Dey Rey editions, and while I loved the first two, I found it hard to get into Titus Alone. But it did lead me to read Boy In Darkness (a "lost" episode from Gormenghast), Letters From a Lost Uncle, Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor, and My Eyes Mint Gold, a biography of Mervyn Peake. His vision as an illustrator seems to me as important as his vision as an author.
