by Rinker Buck

Writer Rinker Buck looks back more than 30 years to a summer when he and his brother, at ages 15 and 17 respectively, became the youngest duo to fly across America, from New Jersey to California. This is simply a delightful book of growing up in the 60s. Two boys and their dad rebuild a Piper J-3 Cub and are the boys are taught how to fly it. They eventuually fly it across the country, from NJ to San Diego and maverously tell the story of that flight, pre GPS, radios, weather reporting, all in a very slow but wonderful aircraft. You don't need to be a pilot to love this book. IF you have friends who are pilots, give it as a gift. Most haven't ever heard of this, no less read it. ...

I just added this to mywish list. I am a pilot too (not current - as I never took it back up after Sept 11). It would be great to find a good book on flying. Everything I've read was pretty dry. I'll check back with you after I read it!

About growing up in the 60s, being a boy, following a dream, and flying

This is one of those books that has never gotten the acclaim it deserves as a story. It is not "timeless writing" but its passages are charming. It is a true story of a Dad and his two sons rebuilding a plane (a J-3 Piper Cub) and the two boys eventually flying it from NJ to San Diego. It you like real coming of age stories, or the real romance of aviation, this is one great book. I think most pilots don't even know about it - maybe because we aren't all that bright! I loved this book.
