Reading it is like talking to an old friend you've not seen in a few years and they sit you down with a pitcher of tea and tell you all about whats been going on in their life. The book is set in rural NC in the mid to late 70's, bout the time I was starting school, and the author is a North Carolinian which is why this book seems not only real but also familiar. I swear I've heard some of these conversations in real life, like when they take a family vacation to Myrtle Beach and Raney's mom and dad argue over which way to take and then Charles (Raney's husband on his first beach trip with his in-laws) suggests they stop and eat lunch at a nice sit down restaurant and it causes a ruckus because they always stop at the same Hardee's every year. In my case it's the McDonald's in Lugoff, even if we just stopped half an hour before, we have to stop at the McDonalds in Lugoff. Raney's husband Charles fought in Vietnam and hails from Atlanta and his more worldly view allows Mr. Edgerton to look at some social issues and sets off the comedy of the often narrow minded view of the folks who populate Raney's world.”

This one is just a hoot, year one of a marriage of a "traditional" southern girl to a more liberal city-raised man. The dialogue is so funny and the portrayal of Raney's family reminds me so much of my aunts and uncles. I reread this anytime I just want to laugh out loud!”
