Harry Bosch is retired from LAPD and working as a private detective. Graciela McCaleb hires him to investigate the death of her husband, Terry, a former FBI agent. Bosch begins to investigate after Graciela tells him that Terry was taking his meds to prevent rejection of the heart he had received, but there wasn't evidence of the proper medicines in his system. Graciela had his medicine analyzed and it wasn't the correct medicine. As Bosch begins the case, the Poet, a serial killer who had headed the FBI years before, sends a message to Rachel Walling, an agent in disgrace who had been trained by the Poet, Robert Backus. When Bosch's case leads him to the burial site of the Poet's latest group of victims, he and Rachel Walling begin working together to stop Backus despite the disapproval of the FBI agent in charge of the case. As usual, Bosch is a step ahead of the others working the case. He is also worrying about his personal life--his daughter who lives in Las Vegas with her mother and a call from Kiz, his former partner at LAPD, who asks Bosch to consider coming back to work.
