- Squire: an seemingly upstandin man (at least to the towns people) who brought Linnet and Miranda to Spring Lick, Kentucky and got her a job as a teacher there. but he has other plans and not just to be a govenor.
- Nettie Waters: a good friend to Linnet who seems to be the only one in Spring Lick who doesnt gossip about everyone and try and bully Linnet into marrying the Squire.
- Rachel Waters: daughter of Nettie who does alot of spying for them when things start to heat up.
- Phetna: a scarred old woman that the towns people are scared of because of her disfigurement from being burned when her husband tried to burn her to death and ended up dying hiself. She also used to be in love wth Devons father.
- Yellow Hand: a young Shawnee brave that is often found at Phetnas and helps Linnet and Phetna.
- Butch Gather: shop owner in Spring Lick, and father to some of the children in Linnets school.
