- Claire Willoughby: Heir to the Willoughby fortune american and is seemingly in love with Harry MacArran, this she thinks will make her a dutchess and make her parents happy. since they approve (which is part of the contingency of the inheritance set up by her grandfather). She is also intrigued with Trevelyan MacArran whom she does not yet know is her fiances brother and her favorite author in truth. of adventure.
- Sarah Ann (Brat) Willoughby: 14 yr old sister who is a real troublemaker. thinks that Claire needs to appreciate Harrys ways and that he could be more controlled if she would see things differently. may have an eye for Harry.
- Henry James Charles Albert Montgomery aka Harry MacArran of the MacArran Clan: youngest son thought by all to be the only living son of the MacArran clan, betrothed to Claire, but not really in love with her just her money. Is truly only loyal to his mother. thinks she a very sweet person to all. jealous of Trev.
- Trevelyan (Vellie) MacArran aka Capt. Frank Baker: a adventurer and writer of anthropoligal genre in life. in love with Claire but wont admit it.
- Oman: Trev's servant from India.
- Arva Willoughby: mother of Claire and Sarah, wife of George Willoughby. wants to socialize with the ton or arristocracy.
- George Willoughby: father of Cliare and Sarah, husband of Arva, has misused his funds and has lost his fortune is after Claire to help him get it back. putting pressure on Claire to make them look good. etc.
- Eugenia MacArran: mother of Harry, Trev, Leatrice, and is bent on staying in control of the MacArran fortune but not above lieiing and manipulating to get it. does not like her son Trev and really thinks he is dead. has a firm thumb on Lee.
- Leatrice MacArran: sister to Harry and Trev. daughter of Eugenia, in love with the same man for years and marries him despite her mother and with the help of her brother trev.
- Uncle Cameron (Cammy) Montgomery: Harry, Trev, and Lees Uncle - likes to write and perform plays for no one in particular.
- Aunt May: is a little bit out there. she saw Trev and he told her that he was a ghost and she believed him.
- Jack Powell: a former partner of Trevs thinks he is dead? maybe. and is trying to take credit for Trevs adventures and thwart information saying otherwise.
- Angus MacTarvit: a subclan on the MacArran land who makes wiskey and steals cattle from the MacArrans. and they steal wiskey from him. likes Claire and is seeming to try and help her.
- Miss Rogers: Old gray woman who is stuffy and unmovable and demeaning to Claire. she was appointed by Eugenia to "help" Claire settle in.
- James Kincaid: former lover of Leatrice and ends up marrying her to spite Lees mother. a writer of biography.
- Nyssa: A priestess of Pesha, former? lover of Trevelyan, turns out to be friend of Claire and Sarah, is due to reign five years and then die for her country. She is thought to commit suicide and then be burned and ashes sent back to her country. but surprise!
