With its plethora of characters, this is not a book to try to read in spurts. Great descriptive passages about English landscape. The resolution of the story was a little over the top, but all in all a good mystery.

Audio Books are very useful. I read and saw this one a while ago and I was pleasantly suprised at how much I remembered. This is a very early effort and it is well crafted but not as well written as The Murder Room. The final wrap up, esp. is a bit clumsy. The characters are well developed and Jane Dalgliesh is particularly interesting.

    P. D. James is simply ripping – a literary writer first and foremost, and a mystery writer only by genre. Her books are full of psychological depth, strong and believable characterization, a sobering gravitas, and unlike most mysteries, stand up under re-reading. And of course they’re corking good mysteries! Long live the Baroness J!

Understanding hundreds of thousands can't be wrong. My trusted friend says, PD James!! PD James!! So I try one and I find out a second? (Children of Men). Big disappointment for me. Trying Crime Fiction/Mystery new to me. And am enjoying the glam and jello of the whole thing. But while reading PD I was like blah blah blah blah blah blah ... recommendations welcomed and encouraged. Save her rep from me!

This is an earlier Adam Daligliesh mystery and it was very good.
