I LOVED THIS BOOK! I Cried!

Pg. 64- Miss Ella talking in his head - Don't even think about letting that go to your head. To whom much is given, much is expected.

    Pg. 145
I came home one afternoon, all full of myself, and Miss Ella yelled at me not to track mud inside the house. I ignored her. Quick as a minute, she reached me, jerked my head around, and said, "Child, you listen to me, and you look me straight in the eyes when I'm talking to you. I may be just old hired help, and a country woman to boot, but I'm a human. And you know what? God thought of me. He actually took the time to dream me up. I may not be much to look at, but what you see first started in the mind of God, so don't stand there and ignore me like I don't exist. You remember that."

"You got something special in here. You may have the greenest eyes and best bat in Little League, but you're more than good looks, home runs, and triples. You got something inside that few else got. God gave you a people place big enough for more than just yourself. You start believing all this stuff other people say and pretty soon you'll only have room for you. Remember, there's an inverse relationship between your head and your heart. If your head swells, your heart shrinks."

    Pg. 304
"Willfull defiance must willfully be defied. Because it leads to the grave, child. The grave." "Then, whythe cross?" "Because, child, you got to die before you can live."

    Pg. 333
"Tucker, you won't understand this until you have a boy of your own, but listen close. The sins of the father are carried down to the son. There's nothing you can do to stop what's passed to you. You are going to wrestle with it until the day you die, whether you like it or not. The only choice is whether or not you pass them to your son. Stopping it is a choice you make."

    P. 334
"You listen to me. I'm going to be in heaven a long time before you get there, but I expect you to show up. You understand? It's up to you. I can't get you there. My praying is done. Every day that you get up, you got to lay that anger down. Lay it down and walk away. Then one day, you'll wake up and forget it's there. Only the remnant remains. An empty shell. If you don't, it'll eat you up and you'll rot like Rex. From the inside out. Child, love wins."

    Pg. 339

Tucker to Miss Ella "Don't tell me you never thought about it"
"Child, my sins are as scarlet now, so Lord knows I thought about it. Most every waking minute. I even picked out my own shotgun. But thinking and doing are two different things."
"But, Miss Ella, what about me?"
"You be light, child. You be light."

Pg. 371 - Tucker giving his childhood treasures to Jase for Christmas

Jase lifted my one-holster belt out of the chest and held it up. The leather was worn but still in good condition. He strapped it on and lifted the gun from its holster. Its fake ivory handle was worn and oily. Next he pulled out my hat and red scarf. Then my boots, a bag of marbles, my collection of matchbox cars totaling almost a hundred, my Lincoln Logs, a bag of nearly two hundred green plastic army men, two rubber-band guns, a pirate's sword, and a pair of glittery wings that might fit a little girl."

"I'm getting married today. Provided you let us. In an hour, Mutt's picking up both Rex and the Judge and dropping them at your front door here where Mose, along with Judge, is doing the honors. I don't expect Rex to know much, but I figured I'd invite him. And when I asked the Judge to stand in, he started crying, so I think we did good there. This morning, when I woke up, I had to remind myself to say it, I mean, to tell myself that I forgive Rex. I think that's a good sign. Maybe the hurt is moving toward the backseat, and I think that's a starting place.

Charles Martin is one of the best Christian fiction writers and I love that he lives, and at least in this book, writes about places close to me! He creates characters and situations that are believable and his setting descriptions are beautiful.
Good things about this book were the sense of place, the development of the main character, and the touching portrayal of redemption of a truly horrible situation.
Things I didn't enjoy so much were a few odd circumstances that seemed contrived and thrown in haphazardly or maybe just to overstress a point. I am thinking of the ice cream truck storyline.........very odd and didn't fit the story; and the pregnancy............very abrupt, unexpected, and unexplained. Also unnecessary, in my opinion.
I so loved Miss Ella's character, but I thought there was way too much letting her speak throughout. I was starting to wonder if Tucker was going crazy like his brother, since he seemd to hear her voice all the time!
Overall, a good book, especially considering it is Christian fiction that is well-written. I won't ready most CF because it is so contrived just to get across the Message.
I plan to read all of Charles Martin's books eventually.

Wrapped in Rain is a coming home story. The main charactor grew up in a home with an abusive father and a loving housekeeper, Ella Rain. The lessons that Ella Rain taught him live within him every day, even after she has passed away. The author does a great job building his charactors.
