Summoned by an old friend (Pamela Webb), Irene Stenson returns to her hometown of Dunsley after 17 years and quickly finds herself in the middle of a death investigation which she believes may be related to the death of her parents years ago. Seventeen years prior, Irene returned home after spending an evening with Pamela to discover that her parent’s dead of an apparent murder/suicide. Never satisfied with that explanation, Irene has been trying to make peace with her past and has found some very interesting coping mechanisms that include night lights and yoga. And now that they are ruling Pamela’s death an apparent suicide, Irene is even more determined to get to the heart of just what is going on in this small town. With the assistance of Luke Danner, a devastatingly charming ex-Marine (who is battling his own demons), Irene is determined to determine the truth.

Irene’s fear of the dark and Luke’s suspected post traumatic stress disorder label make them quite the pair as they find love and investigate several strange occurrences in a town that is full of secrets and a hot bed of drama. Soon we learn how very small the town of Dunsley is, and what lengths people are willing to take to keep their secrets buried.

Ms Krentz is no stranger to me. I’ve read her other historical romances penned under Amanda Quick, but this would be the first contemporary suspense I’ve read of hers. Good thing I decided to pick it up too, ‘coz I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. It really is a book worth staying up All Night Long to finish.

This was my first Jayne Ann Krentz, and I was quite pleased with it. I found myself picking it up even when I only had a few minutes to read, which is a very good sign that it kept me interested. I also found myself changing my mind about it while reading… There is a cat that JAK lets out of the bag a little early in the book, and I originally thought that was a mistake. However, that cat turns out to be a dog (you get my metaphor here, right?), so instead of a disappointing plot slip you find you’ve fallen victim to a very good red herring. Never would I have guessed the real reason for Pamela’s death. And there’s just the right amount of romance mixed in with the suspense as Luke and Irene find some stress relief in each other. The epilogue is a little too sappy for my tastes, but I guess she wanted to make sure everyone gets their happily ever after.

Luke Danner, an ex-Marine, runs a run down bunch of cabins in N. California... he becomes curious and intrigued when Irene Stenson rents a cabin and leaves her lights on all night. He finds out mystery surrounds her and sets out to solve it.

Ex-Marine Luke Danner, the hero of this story, is a character who tickles my funny bone while making me appreciate the "hero" element of his character. Irene comes to his lodge in response to an email from an old friend whom she hasn't seen since the night her parents were murdered. Luke and Irene are drawn to into a decades old mystery tied around the most powerful people in California. Great suspense. Great romance. Great underlying humor. Love the way Jayne Ann Krentz writes.

An excellent novel! A well written plot. I so didn't see it coming. Action scenes written just right and in all the right places. And you get a great picture of the town of Dunsley and its population. And just the right amount of 'strategc dots' (you'll get the pum when you read it, LOL!), well written and well played out made this an interesting novel and kept me glued. Every time I tried to put the novel down, I would think about the characters and what was happening that I kept picking it back up. Which was a good thing cause I bought it as a hardcover for $8(CDN) and I'm back at work on Monday. I really liked the main characters, Irene and Luke. Both complex characters that went through so much in their lives and it makes you that much happier that they found each other. Of course, the sizzle between them surely helped. What I liked about these two was that, no matter who they'd been before, who they'd been with before, they were completely honest with each other, even the embarrassing stuff. Even his family. Althoughthey thought he needed the help and went about it the only way they knew how, I laughed right along with Irene. Sure, they didn't know him like she did, but I was still glad that they loved him that much to think that part needed to be put into the novel just as much as everything else did. Yep, an excellent novel.
