The title of this book already is a give-away. Basically the main character, Charley Benetto, wishes he could have one more day with his deceased mother. Considering his parents divorced when he was young, it affected him both physically and mentally. As Charley grows up, his family grows further and further apart. His father, who left the family, advises him to become a major baseball player and gives Charley high expectations to be the best he possibly can. The day he happens to secretly leave to meet up with his father to pay an important game of baseball, his mother passes away. He regrets this day for the rest of his life. The story goes on talking about what he would do if he had one more day to see her and how the main character copes with his depression, and looses himself within it. Throughout the book, Charley reminiscences on his childhood and what he could have done to prevent his mother's death.
