The translation I read was brilliant, the humour was really subtle and reminded me of PG Wodehouse, where...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“The is perhaps the most boring book I've ever read. It gets lots of competition for that honor from Anna Karenina and anything by Jane Austen. It has the complexity of Dostoievski and the depth of what greeks would call self conscious. The love story between Clavdia and Hans is unique in universal literature, as is the famous love declaration said by Hans to Clavdia. But the important aspect of the book is the inner quest of the main character to search and find himself, climbing to the top and becoming as Mann himself says "an initiated person". Read it and you will find that no other book has ever been as substantial and as complete as this one.”

It transports you to the world of the Swiss Sanitorium among the Alps where time seems to stand still and life is leisurely and self contained. I don't remember the plot or the characters but I do remember what a satisfying read it was.”
