Apparently Poe is considered to be the inventor of the detective novel. As such, the format of this story will be familiar to most. It is brilliant in its simplicity, though the mathematics part of the explanation did go over my head and bore me a little.

Detective story. Dupin recounts how he found a letter that has eluded the Parisan police.

This story is much different from any other story I've read by Poe. I'm used to dark, depressing, and scary from Poe, but this was a detective story. A rather good one at that.

To understand this work, the reader needs to look up the meaning of all the obscure words and Latin phrases. Once you learn these, The Purloined Letter is a very interesting story.

Classic Poe. Its such a shame he was never recognized for the genius of his writing while he was still alive.
