Shinmen Musashi no Kami Genshin was born in the province of Harima, a descendant from the Akamatsu clan. His father, Miyamoto Munisai, was in the service of Kuroda Toshitaka, a brother of Kuroda Yoshitaka. Munisai had acquired the rare art of fighting with the jitte and later adopted it into his Nitô school of fencing. He had many deshi. Among them was Aoki Jôemon, a deshi who had received from Munisai a license to teach.
