I just love this book so far! Her life is so hard but it is amazing to read and learn. I think that while she is overcomeing all of these problems she to is learning something very important about life: youve got to go through bad times to understand the good times.

First couple of chapters it was hard for me to get into because of the dialect, but then the story line kept me going. It blows me away that Janie/Leshaya, being raised in foster care and living with drug dealers, was so immature and naive. This was a good book and it does have a great message.

Born Blue is an emotional story about the lives of two girls named Janie and Leshaya who are very different but still suffer from similar issues. Janie has to go through life with a mother who is a heroin addict, usually Janie was neglected by her mother, left to survive on her own. Because of her mother's negligence which put Janie in a dangerous situation. Janie is put into a foster home. Janie becomes best friends with her foster brother Harmon and Doris a social worker. Both of her to friends are African American, Janie a blonde, blue eyed girl starts to adapt black culture. Janie falls in love with the blues and Black artists, she realizes she wants to sing this type of music which becomes her new love. Leshaya also suffers from a hard life, needing money and a home. Like Janie she starts to sing jazz and falls in love. She becomes pregnant at 16, but later she realizes her baby would have a better life without her and moves on to better her life.
Born Blue was one of the most emotional books I have ever read and although it could be very depressing it teaches you to appreciate the life you have and your parents. I recommend this book to people who like books with a lot of drama and serious issues some teenagers face, bigger than just high school issues and boyfriend issues. This book deals with two different girls that suffer from abandonment and issues with family, drugs. But that all goes away when they are singing jazz. I really liked this book and I think more books should focus on bigger, deeper issues like this book.
