Great collection of patterns, a true breakthrough in computer science. Some of the descriptions and examples are quite difficult to grasp.

The book that should be read by any self respecting software architect. The patterns mainly focus on creating an OO architecture thats flexible and resemble the real world. After all these years these patterns are still essential to understand any software architecture. Some patterns lost there relevancy because of language changes and tooling. (C# has less pitfalls then C++ and .NET has a lot of flexibility build in) There's also a version that implements the patterns in C#

When I was learning C++, the "Visitor" pattern is what opened my "C programmers" eyes to what OO was all about.

A landmark book since the invention of OO programing. After reading it for the first time, I felt my power of programming and design improved at least 5 times.

It's really a Bible for those who plan to deal with modern object-oriented design and programming. The book is definitely not enough to become a good architect but the one to start with. It helps to gain a new understanding of what the software design is, especially for those who come to development from academic spheres.

I do recommend this book, although it is REALLY time they consider another edition. And no, not just because of the SmallTalk and C++; the examples are obviously antiquated and/or too academic to be interesting.

I was only able to read the first half of the book. Most the examples are in Java, which I am not familiar with.
