This book is about the author's life of when he was a little boy. Dave Pelzer was abused by his mother who was an alcoholic. He was stabbed, burned, and starved. His mother sometimes wouldn't let him eat for days. As much as he tried to be a " good boy" his mother would still abuse him. His mom would play some " games" with him too. She would mix chemicals and lock the boy in the bathroom with the chemicals. Soon Dave would cough out blood for hours because of that. His mom would also make him eat things that even animals wouldn't eat.
For me, this book was really intense. I couldn't believe what the mother had done to her child. I felt so bad for the little boy. I felt like I couldn't stop reading this book because each page had something interesting to read about. I feel that anyone can read this book, but they are going to be shocked at what they are reading.

  • yeah i cried too which is uncommon for me. this book was intense. the part that made me want to to puke was wen his mom made him (by punching him in the stomach) throw up to see if he was eating without her knowing. The first time it happend he ate school hotdogs and after he threw it up his mom took the nasty mess and put it in a bowl to show his dad. THEN she made him eat it. it was soo sad and gross.

I was shocked to read that this book was "non-fiction" instead of "fiction". I was enraged by his family's (including his own father) "lack of interest" who seemed not to care that he was being abused. How can a family let that go on for years and years? And, how can a "mother" treat her child so badly? My heart broke reading this story. His other two books are riveting accounts of how he survived this abuse and eventually prospered. Dave Pelzer is an inspiration to anyone! If you ever get the chance to, please see him speak. He's an incredible speaker and his story is one that needs to be told.

non-fiction is when it is a read story.... fiction is an imagined story.... this book is correctly labeled....

This review was helpful. She touched on almost all the abusive behavior that was mentioned in this book. I agree with this person because you really wont believe your mind what the mother does to this poor child. It's really mindbogging to this day.
