In this Newbery Honor Book, Sam Gribley surprises everyone when he decides to live on his own in the Catskill Mountains. Sam learns a lot about the land of his great-grandfather and about himself as he finds ways to survive in the wilderness.

Sam Gribley runs away to upstate New York and lives off the land at his family’s old farm. Interesting, well told tale of survival in the wilderness.

I read and loved this book when I was between nine and twelve (haven't had time for a reread since). Sam is such an interesting narrator and I was fascinated by his account of living off the land. I thought that I would not like the end as he was being discovered and all that but what the end turned out to be was the best that could possibly happen!
