  • Miss Lucy Marling: Almost 30 employee of Mr. Adams running his market garden and farming ventures, and his future wife. An intelligent, practical girl of courage and remarkable perserverance who has cared for her aging parents, and adores her brother Oliver. Always says, "I'll tell you what..."
  • Mr Sam Adams: 50ish wealthy, self-made ironmaster of Hogglestock mills, newly engaged owner of the Old Bank House, Edgewood and MP for Barchester. Father of Heather, whose mother died when she was very young, grown, finishing Maths at Oxford and marrying Ted Pilward..
  • Mrs. Amabel Marling: Mother of Bill, Lettice, Oliver and Lucy.
  • Hon. Mr. William Marling: Aging, partially deaf, irrascable owner of Marling Hall
  • Oliver Marling: Lucy's brother, confidant and freind. Moons hopelessly after Jessica Dean Clover. Writing an esoteric and scholarly book on the poetry - erotoc - of Bohun. Selfish, self-centered and self-indulgent

  • Francis Brandon,: Mrs Brandon's "bone selfish" son, husband of Peggy Arbuthnot) Brandon, father of three, who rides roughshod over his mother
  • Mrs. Francis (Peggy Arbuthnot) Brandon: Wife of Francis Brandon, mother of three" Effie and twins. Widowed in India, she used to flirted outrageously with anything in pants, and loved to act in amateur productions, but is now sidelined by her husand's demand's for her attention.
  • Robin Dale: Junior Housemaster of Southbridge School. Married to Anne Fielding, parents of twin girls
  • Mrs. Robin (Anne Fielding) Dale: Married to Robin Dale, parents of twin girls, only child of Lord and Lady Fielding.
  • Siir Edmund Pridham: One of the older gentlemen fluttering around Mrs. Brandon
  • Lady Cora Pallister of Gatherum Castle: Young , slightly impoverished "Lady" with a love of amateur theatricals
  • Jeffrey Pallister, Lord Silverbridge of Gatherum Castle: Heir of Gatherum Castle, writing histort of Barsetshire Yeomanry regiment, plays the piano beautifully. Wishes he had the funds to campaigb for the House of Lords. Works for the publishers, Johns.
  • Plantagenant Pallister, Duke of Omnium: Aging duke, father of Lady Cora ans Lord Silverbridge. Collects sham books for his library door
  • Duchess of Omnium: KInd and caring mother of Lady Cora and Lord Silverbridge, and a younger son, Gerry, who died at the end of the war
  • Mr. Parkinson: new vicar of Pomfret Madrigal - low church, with a wife and children. Not a very bright young man.
  • Miss Frances Harvey: Official in Department of General Interference, brother Geoffrey in Tape and Sealing Wax Office. Frances almost got Oliver Marling to propose during the war.
