Braeden Drakonin: Braeden is the son of Carden and Myra Drakonin and is the Heir to the Stele, a notorious yakona kingdom known for its love of torture and murder. He, however, escaped that life when he was a boy thanks to his mother Myra – who he lost when the carriage in which they were riding was hijacked and then abandoned. Love interest of Kara. He is the adopted brother of Blood Gavin.
The First Vagabond: Though his name has been lost to legends, the First Vagabond created the Grimoire and, with it, a new race in Ourea called the vagabonds. When he took on the title of Vagabond, he sought to restore the peace treasured by the lost city of Ethos before its great collapse, when it crumbled from within. Ethos was a mighty city where all of the yakona kingdoms lived as one, but even in his day it was an ancient legend. War became endless and hopeless.
Blood Gavin: Gavin has always been easily able to woo the ladies of his kingdom and has never wanted for anything in his life. He is quick to make decisions and rarely reflects once his mind is made up, but he always acts out of care for his kingdom and for his family. He is loyal to his people — and only to his people.
Deirdre: Very little is known of Deirdre, though it is believed that she blames her master for killing her lover centuries ago. Rumors claim that she tried to kill Niccoli once, long ago, and that she nearly died herself in the attempt. She has a scar as a reminder of the effort: an 8-pointed star on her right wrist.
Blood Carden: Blood Carden is known throughout Ourea for his cruelty and propensity for murder. His prisoners are always tortured until death becomes a mercy — a mercy that he doesn’t always grant. His favorite torture method is the slivers, a vile technique that forces the brain to shock itself when its victim thinks of his or her most cherished memories, even long after the torture is over.
Adele: Adele is a powerful, headstrong, and loyal being with a soft spot for those in need. Though she may come off as brusque or rude, she protects all life and cares deeply for you if she allows you to see her.
Garrett: Garrett is quiet and pensive, speaking only when he feels it is absolutely necessary. When he takes charge in a moment, it is best that everyone simply listen and obey; though it is difficult to anger him, he is not to be trifled with when riled or upset.
“If Braeden had stepped just a few feet into Stone's cave, he would have seen the isen grab his coat and set the Grimoire pendant on a small coffee table by a marble sofa covered in red cushions. He would have also heard the isen humming before muttering something about hurrying if he was to make it to Scotland in time.”
“"How do you know all that?""I am Death. I know all.""That must make your job simple."”
The Stele: The Stele kingdom is home to a race of yakona called Stelians. They have dark gray skin, and their pores begin to smoke when they are angry or pleased. Their black eyes have no whites to them. They were banished to the Stele when Ethos was abandoned, and have been killed on sight by the other kingdoms ever since.
Hillside: The kingdom of Hillside is home to a race of yakona called Hillsidians. This race most closely resembles humans, except that they have exceptionally thick bones and thick skin that make them difficult to kill. The Hillsidian castle is comprised of five massive trees, each hundreds of feet tall. These trees are connected with a hundred rope bridges, so that those who live and work in the castle may access any tree from any other tree in a matter of minutes.
Kirelm: The kingdom of Kirelm is home to a race of yakona called Kirelms. Kirelms are unique in that they have stunning silver skin and broad white, gray, or black wings. They also have enhanced eyesight and a sharpened sense of smell. Their thick skin makes it possible to comfortably fly at high altitudes and fast speeds.Kirelm is located on a floating cloud that constantly moves. The city is divided into two sections, each of which is protected by a dome made of thin, impenetrable silver wires.
Losse: The kingdom of Losse is home to a race of yakona called Lossians. Lossians are unique in that they can breathe both above and below the water. Their blue skin and large seaweed-green eyes make it easy for them to blend into any body of water, and they are frequently mistaken by humans to be mermaids. Real mermaids are much more vicious. Losse is hidden beneath a vast ocean, far enough down to go unnoticed but still near enough to see the distant surface. The city is protected by a bubble of golden light that becomes blue at night, thereby creating false daylight or moonlight to illuminate the city at any given time. Recycled air exists within the bubble, thus making it easier for them to speak to each other.
