This is the first Pearl S. Buck novel I ever read, and I've loved her books ever since. Still, "Imperial Woman" is my favorite - even better than her masterpiece "The Good Earth." Buck gives a wonderful insight into Chinese culture and tells the fictionalized story of a real historical figure, Tzu-Hzi (also known as Empress Dowager Cixi).

This book is wonderful in its depth of understanding of chinese culture and development. The descriptions bring the place alive and serve to aid imagination. Anyway I always prefer strong women.
