“This book was epically disappointing. I recently got to hear this author speak at my local library, so I was primed to love this book. I also loved Box's first novel, Open Season. But this book bombed on all levels for me: characterization, plot, and finale.
I didn't like or care about any of the characters in this story. Gracie, one of the two girls who is kidnapped, ends up sharing the same chief character trait as the head villain-- never a good sign. The dialogue is so poorly written (especially the teen dialogue and the dialogue between the bad guys), I found myself cringing. The point of view jumps from person to person throughout the novel, and the person who is left in charge of tracking down the serial killer in this book is Completely Inept. This level of ineptitude is not at all endearing. The character is simply portrayed as being Totally Stupid, and I cannot give details about how sad and frustrating this was without spoiling the plot. I won't be reading any more books by CJ Box, as this novel was just too distasteful, on all levels. ”
