The author evoked the hot dusty Italian countryside well, and the feelings and antics of the children with their petty rivalries and sense of adventure. The adults however I felt were not so well drawn and didn't seem true to thier natures. I don't see how Michele's father could be so cruel to the captive boy, and associate himself with the bad guys. It also wasn't clear if the whole village was in on the kidnapping, or just some of them.
The ending of this book put me in mind of "Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" in how the children were unaware of the adults world, and had a similar, though more tragic end.”
“I liked this book alot. it kept me guessing till the very end.”

Loved the author's use of short sentences and dialogue for characterization rather than lengthy descriptions. A little more sexuality than I would've expected for a story told by a nine year old, but I might chalk that up to a European author. I'd say more about the plot and/or characters, but don't think I could do so without spoiling. Fast-moving, excellent book.”

It's about the loss of innocence in grown ups,the little kids can have far more morality, loyality and innocence and do things which grown ups don't have the guts to do so!! Michele is the hero of this novel. He's only 9 and lives in Aqua Traverse, a small place which said to be forgotten by god, somewhere in Italy with his 5 year old sister Maria and his parents. His dad seems to be working hard to make money and keeps telling that they we will move to north one day!! But this is only an unreachable dream for this family. Aqua Traverse is made up of three families, everyone is sick of summer heat. The only hobby for kids is to ride a bit around the place which doesn't seem to contain any mystries in, but when Skull the chief of their gang forces Michele to do a "forfeit", he finds something which he keeps as a secret in the rest of story. Something which is related to whole village, something which changes everyone else in village, something which Michele wasn't ment see.Something like..... . Michele 9 has to overcome his fears during this time, so he keeps fighting with his imaginations, fears, moralities, childish and finally himself and his soroundings... . However he follows his childish manner, but he will be the only hero in Aqua Traverse.”
