Harold goes for a walk with his purple crayon and draws the story around himself. He begins by walking on a straight path, then draws a tree with a dragon guarding it and then an ocean. He gets in a boat and sails along until he lands on a beach and draws a picnic. When he can't finish, he draws a moose and porcupine to eat the rest. Then he needs to get a look at where he is, so he draws a hill that turns into a mountain, which he falls off. He draws a balloon around himself and lands in a city, asks a policeman where to go and finds his room which he enters and falls asleep.
