“The finishing book in the series. I've been told that the books are nothing like the film made from them, which might explain why my 7-year-old son doesn't quite like me reading the series anymore, to him.
In this final book the Grace siblings have escaped the dwarves that have kept them captive, only to arrive home and find the entire house wrecked and their mother missing. Not knowing what to do, Jared, the troublemaker, grabs the brownie and head back to the forest to find the elves. He is granted a short session with his great-grandfather Arthur Spiderwick, who refuses to understand that he has been gone for 70 years. He can't tell Jared a whole lot about Mulgarath more than that he is vain and that the goblins aren't very bright.
Jared and his siblings go in search for Mulgarath, joined by the brownie, hobgoblin and the griffin. Together they defeat goblins and the dragon's babies. When they finally find their mother in the ogre's palace, Jared has to use all his intelligence to outwit the ogre to save them all.
The book of course ends well with Arthur Spiderwick being released by the elves and getting to say goodbye to his daughter properly before he dies. It's a dark book but I have read it all the same to my 7-year-old since we had read the other four!”
“The book is full of adventue. I loved how the boys always got into mischief and their sister was always against it but always ends up right in the middle.”Kylie Cool wrote this review Wednesday, August 28, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“What a ride, almost everything in the book made sense and odd ends were tied up. After the last book the Grace children know who terrible Mulgarath can be. They arrive back at the Spiderwick Estate to fine it ransacked by Mulgarath and his goblin army. It just gets really intresting from there. Griffins, Fantastic Illustrations and drawings, Dragons, baby dragons, sprites covred in honey,Dwarven sword fighting, more shape-shifting from Mulgarath, and a castle made of....stuff and junk.
The only thing I didn't like was that Mulgarath was defeated to easily. I mean you should atleast struggle with the main bad guy.
I loved the characters personalties in this book, they really all came out as there own. The Epilogue was a really icing on the cake. But, is this really the end of the Grace kids adventure...we will find out. Really enjoyed this different view on the faerie and fae world. ”

“The Spiderwick Chronicles are fun, entertaining stories. The illustrations are fantastic and add a delightful dimension to the over all feeling. Jared, Simon, and Mallory are great, I like the interaction between them; brothers and sister, but coming together when things get tough. And tough it gets, but the siblings rise to the occasion; Simon shines. The ending was unexpected, tender and fun. This is a great series!”Stan wrote this review Saturday, September 8, 2012.
