In Santa Barbara, California, you can visit the original Santa Barbara Mission. The real woman who inspired the story of Island of the Blue Dolphins is buried there, and you can learn about her true story. It is a very meaningful experience for anyone who, like me, has always been haunted by this book.

This book is still one of my favorites, and I will always be captivated by it. Zia was not nearly as good, but I recommend reading it anyway, just so you have the whole story.
