I read this in fifth grade, and fell in love with it after the first chapter! It is about a girl (Karana) who is in an indian tribe back when Europeons were taking away their land. The Indian Tribe gets taken away from the Island of the Blue Dolphins by some Europeons. Then Karana notices that...

This book is enjoyable to read because it brings you into the adventure of fending for yourself: setting up a home, finding food, making tools and making friends.

While her tribe is being taken away from her native island, a girl jumps overboard when she realizes that her little brother has been left behind. Soon she is left completely alone when wild dogs kill her brother. While watching for a ship to return for her, she spends many years surviving on her own with only animals for company. The rich descriptions of her resourcefulness and determination are inspiring. This book is based off the true story of The Lost Woman of San Nicolas, who was rescued and taken to the Santa Barbara Mission in 1853. The fact that this fictionalized survival story is rooted in history gives it an added element of appeal. This story could spark a reader’s interest Native American history.

A young Indian girl learns the art of survival when she is stranded on an isolated Pacific island.
"A haunting and unusual story based on the fact that in the early 1800s an Indian girl spent 18 years alone on a rocky island far off the coast of California. . . . A quiet acceptance of fate characterizes her ordeal."--School Library Journal, starred review.
