'Night falls on the Golden Age of Humanity. Sons shall turn upon their father, and His worlds drown in blood. The Eye shall open and the Galaxy will burn.' Thus this prophecy opens this, the first book in Forge World's 'The Horus Heresy' series. And what a magnificent tome it is! Roughly the same dimensions as their Imperial Armour line (a wonderful series in its own right), this book is first class all the way. Bound in black leather binding, it boasts embossed silver lettering on the cover, all of the pages are edged in silver, and silver corner guards (embossed with the Imperial Aquila) on all the corners. The contents are equally impressive, with extensive background information on the rise of the Emperor, the founding of the Imperium and the creation of the Legiones Astartes. The book goes on to cover the early days of the Great Crusade and the finding of the Primarchs. Finally, the death of Isstvan III and the treachery of Warmaster Horus is covered in great detail. Additionally, the history (pre-Heresy) and tactics of the four traitor Legions at Isstvan III--the Sons of Horus, the World Eaters, the Emperor's Children, and the Death Guard--are covered in depth, with special attention given to each of their respective Primarchs. As always, the pictures are the highlight, showcasing Forge World's fantastic line of 'miniatures' and models and boasting excellent FX, including explosions, weapons fire, and motion blur--Forge World has come a long way! There are a few flaws here though--none of the 'live action' pictures have captions, something the Imperial Armour books have done well. A far greater oversight is the lack of profile spread of any of the traitor Primarchs--indeed, the prominent picture of Primarch Angron of the World Eaters that opens the book practically screams for a profile spread. In any event, this is still a fantastic book and well worth a look by any Warhammer 40k fan.
