The novel starts with convoluted nightmares--Katheryna sees shadows and hear colliding metals, then, finds herself on the swings on a playground--she feels abandoned. She sees a large animal about to attack her and then disappears.
She wakes up while her nightmares disappear from her memory. She lives in South Carolina where she attends Madison High school. On her way she passes by a coffee shop and bumps into a stranger. He seemed familiar but she knew she'd never met him before. His behavior was aggressive.
Several days later she sees him again at a seminar and then at the restaurant where she got hired. Upon finding him once again at the library, he accuses her of stalking him. He leaves. The following day she sees him again and was making cryptic remarks that didn't make any sense. Then, she meets a guy (Josh) who took her out on a date at an amusement park. She falls from the ride along with Josh. She was hospitalized but was perfectly fine but he is in a coma. Feeling too guilty, she nursed him and they had gotten close. She then went to California to take a little break and meets up with all her friends including her ex-boyfriend Cash. He seemed to still be in love with her. On their night swim, something pulls her underwater and she almost drowns. Cash saves her.
When she got back to California, and to her surprise, Tristan visits her at home. She is tongue tied and clumsy-nervous. He then takes her out for a walk--too worried about her and then she collapses. The next day, he comes back still worried and insists on going with her to her doctor's appointment. The third day she meets her at her favorite cafe where he takes her on his fancy yacht. She finds his secretive behavior scary but is too intrigued by him.
The following day, she went to meet him once again at his yacht. He seemed indifferent and at the end of the night tells her they cannot see each other anymore. He is adamant about it so she doesn't pursue.
Several days were hard for her. She didn't understand why it bothered her that he didn't want to see her. She felt depressed almost in mourning. Becca calls her one night to go to a club. She takes her up on it. When they got there she sees Tristan who seemed to have followed her. Out of nowhere there was an altercation that caused for her to fall off her seat. Tristan zooms to her rescue. She then tries to leave but he tugs her back to him and kisses her passionately. She was once again confused. But then, he orders her to go home. With her heart torn, she leaves.
When she sees Tristan at work, he tells her that they needed to talk. He tells her not to go out with Josh. She yells at him and eventually tells him to leave her alone.
She runs to a wooded path until she was too exhausted. She sees a shadow from a distance. It was Tristan. Finally, he confesses that he's a fallen angel. He didn't explain how he fell but only not to go out with anyone for her safety. Several days passed before he was back. She realized she loves him. He tells her he cannot tell her too many details to protect her. Everything seems to be fine. He meets her at a masquerade ball and gives her a rare ruby necklace. She introduces him to her friends. He takes her to Greece. Then a fallen angel(dephil) followed them. At this time, Tristan decides to tell her everything--he was the reason why she cannot remember her nightmares. He was the animal(demon/dephil) who tried to kill her when she was a child. He tells her she has gifts--that she can see the future through her dreams and that she can sense souls and spirits. He leaves then, but comes back after several years, unable to really understand his attraction to her. He was attacked by the dephils and she nursed him. The night he left, he decided to erase her memories about him to protect her from the dephils. That was also the night he told her, he loved her.
Even when she didn't remember him, she remembered losing him. After his confession, he takes her to his house, where she felt surprised to find out more about him. She introduces him to her father. Then one day, she decides to wait for Tristan at his house. Another fallen angel tried to kill her but Tristan had rescued her. He flies her to his yacht and stayed there for several days. Once they had gotten back, he leaves to meet the other fallen and asks Constantine to watch her. She decides to go to her old home to find an old journal and get more clues about her mother's death.
That was when Maxiel (another archangel/dephil) follows her. Tristan shows up and that was when Maxiel bargains his (Tristan's) loyalty for her life. Tristan refuses. They fought and finally Maxiel was momentarily defeated.

  • Katheryna: (aka Kat) She is described as beautiful with long, very black hair and honey eyes. She is portrayed as someone responsible, adventurous, funny at times, humanitarian and someone who has loyal circle of friends. She is a senior at Madison high school. She tries to move on from the tragedy of her mother's death. She was the only witness but somehow she repressed her memories. She is intrigued by Tristan who seem to turn up wherever she's at. His aggresive behavior was a mystery. But when accidents keep trailing her, everything starts to unfold.
  • Tristan: He is known for his blazing-hot, ice-cold gray eyes and for his sexy-messy hair. He is very attractive and intimidating; a mysterious stranger who seem to turn up on unlikely places. He is a character with two sides
  • Cash: He is described as funny and affectionate. He is known for his persistence, charismatic charms, and has a strong personality despite his difficult circumstances as a child. He is tall and medium built with dark hair. He is Katheryna's ex-boyfriend who moved to California. He's still in love with her and calls and e-mails her everyday. His reasons for leaving was something he cannot tell her. He's still very much torn about his decision about their break-up and finds ways to see her. He was Madison High School's football star.
  • Samantha: (aka Sam) She is described as someone who looked like one of the Victoria's Secret models. She has long, dark, wavy hair, olive eyes and has high cheek bones and full lips. Her family was originally from Brazil. She is Katheryna's best friend. They have many things in common and a friend who keeps her sane when things get crazy.
  • Maxiel: He is very attractive and strong. He has gray eyes and is known for his arrogance. He wants Katheryna dead and Tristan's loyalty. He is determined to do what it takes to make this happen even spare her life for his loyalty.
  • Steve: He's 6 feet tall with salt and pepper hair and angular face. He could pass as a male model for a clothing magazine. He is Katheryna's father. He is her only close relative.
  • Becca: She is bubbly and usually doesn't take 'no' for an answer. She is dating Jeremy. She is Katheryna's neighbor and co-worker.
  • Sue: Has thin blode hair and a pale face. She is a bullying survivor and is an advocate for anti-bulllying campaigns. She is Katheryna's first friend when she moved.
  • Avril: Has thick blonde hair and green eyes. She is very athletic and played volleyball in high school. She is the tallest of the girls and is going out with Adam.
  • Airi: Has thick, black hair. She has dolly eyes, a sweet face with small, round lips. She is known for her voguish fashion. She immigrated from Japan.
  • Jen: Is known for wearing her hair short. She is generous, funny and has a take-charge personality. She has a pretty face.
  • Michella: Has thick, black, medium length hair. She is petite and always wore high heels. She immigrated from France.
  • Adam, Ryan, Vinny, Rob, Phillip: Katheryna's guy friends
