Everyone knows the story of Cinderella. But Gregory Maguire takes us steps backwards to see the story behind the story. He deromanticizes the fairy tale and creates a realism behind it, adding a new dimension to a traditional story while staying true to the original framework.

Dark and slightly brooding version of Cinderella. Beautiful!

I became interested in this author after reading Wicked. I love how the author continued in the vein of looking past the basic original story and delved into the underlying possibilities. Outsiders could twist it all they wanted and make it into a story that bolstered beauty and beautiful things as only being good (Cinderella). I particularly liked how he left magic out of it and simply made the visions of magic appear for the main character who was imaginative wanted these things to be true. I know I'm not explaining it very well but it's a fun book and compelling tale. What is beautiful, what is ugly?

My mom got this book as a gift a few years back, and after watching her enjoy herself silly while reading it, I knew I had to give it a shot. If you liked Wicked, odds are you'll like this book as well. I love the way he writes, it's one of those fun to read type of books.

Maguire does Cinderella. Not quite as compelling as "Wicked" or "Son of a Witch", but still enjoyable.
