  • Commissario Guido Brunetti: Chief Inspector Venice police and Leon's protagonist. A thoughtful, honest and dedicated police officer.
  • Paola Brunetti: Guido's wife. A professor of literature at the university. Daughter of Count Orazio Falier, a very wealthy and important Venetian from an ancient family. Intelligent, confident and with a strong moral compass.
  • Claudia Leonardo: A young student of Paola's.
  • Vianello: An Inspector. He works closely with Brunetti. He is an experienced police officer with a quiet and calm demeanour. He is a dedicated environmentalist.
  • Marco Erizzo: Owner of some apartments that are rented to some of the vu campra.
  • Signora Jacobs: A very elderly Austrian woman and the 'adopted' Grandmother of Claudia.
  • Signorina Elettra: Sophisticated and stylish secretary to Brunetti's boss Vice Questore Patta. She often helps Brunetti gather information on suspects by using a network of friends and her advanced computer skills.
  • Luca Guzzardi: The grandfather of Claudia.
