The first two reads were in preparation for leading a staff ride of the Gettysberg battlefield with an Officer Canidate Class (OCS) numerous years ago. Although not a true word for word account of the battle it brings meaning to what the story behind the battle could have been. During the previous reads and staff ride the battle I used the book to place the battle into the context of the military principles being taught. As I read through the account this time I thought it would be interesting to consider the actions of the main charecters using John Maxwell's various books which I am currently studying. There were several laws and principles that placed some of the leader's actions in an interesting light. It maybe interesting to revisit this when time allows. Or maybe a John Maxwell staff ride of the Gettysberg battlefield for some of my executive coaching clients. We will see. ”

“Absolutely blown away. Would have never thought that a civil war novel would grasp my attention the way this one day. The writing was superb, easy to read and the characters(even though it is hard to label real-life people as characters) likable. I felt like I got inside the head of each and every one of them. I want to read other Michael Shaara books now after reading The Killer Angels. ”

“This most compelling historical fiction novel every written about the Battle of Gettysburg won a Pulitzer Prize. Told from the point of view of various generals, Shaara introduces us to the main players and lets us explore both sides of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War and the men who fought it. A must read for everyone interested in American History in general, and the Civil War in particular. A Reader's Corner Highly Recommended Read.”

Shaara's style of portraying the inner thoughts of the generals is especially compelling. ”
