Fletchenham Park House, Nr. Pevensey, Sussex: Fletchenham Park House was completed in 1883, in the style of a Tudor fortified manor, to the orders of financier Emmanuel Morgenthal. Regrettably, this was the peak of Morgenthal’s success. By the 1890s, his “golden touch” had deserted him and by 1910, he was in severe financial difficulties and he was forced to sell the house. It was bought by the rising star of the British press, Edward (later Lord) Billington. After the deaths of both Lord and Lady Billington, the house was closed and put up for sale. It remained unsold, though, until 1936, when the National Physical Laboratory chose it as the site for a radio research laboratory. In February, 1942, the house was destroyed in a low-level air attack by Messerschmitt fight-bombers of the Luftwaffe.
Charteris College, Nr. Catterick Garrison, Yorkshire.: Minor public school, Charteris College, was established in 1785, by Walter Winthrop, distantly related to John Winthrop of Massachusetts. who left America after the Revolution. Its history is uneventful, though it remains well regarded, in spite of few of its old boys ever having achieved great renown; pioneer aviator Colonel Jack Mason was probably the most widely known old boy. Winthrop himself established the Winthrop Scholarship, through which the three most successful entrants in the scholarship exam are awarded free tuition for their full term.Old boys are known simply as Charteris Old Boys, a move in the 19th Century to popularize the term, Old Winthropians, having failed to find widespread favour. The wearing of the old school tie is considered infra dig.Geoffrey Preston was a Winthrop Scholar.
