I don't know why I am so taken in Maupassant works. Perhaps I noticed his obsession and the unavodiable shadow of his madness and that sign of "follie" mesmerised my mind, so I could immerse myself into his tortured world. His stories are usually dirty, gloomy and mean. In this novel the main character is a periodist dazzling good-looking who personally, I found almost dsgusting in his lust and depravity but at the same time he succeed to touch my heart. I was spellbound by this tragic story. Maupassant style belongs to the naturalism stream of Zola, Flaubert but without social anxieties (e.g. in Zola works). He only wrote about human misery in a poignant prose. Although it is deeply disturbing to read Bel Ami story, it is an all-time favorite book in my shelf. ”
