The book "Dear John" by Nicholas Sparks is a very touching book. This book is about a man named John who was a rebel as a kid, and he decided to join the army. When he was on leave he had tattoos, he was muscular, and he had no plan to fall in love. He went to the beach and met a girl named Savannah Lynn Curtis. He later went to a party with her, and after that they couldn't be seperated. They rarely got into fights, and they were perfect for each other. When John had to go back to Germany, where he was stationed, they wondered where their relationship would go from there. They wrote each other everyday and were still passionate about each other, but is that enough?

The book "Dear John" by Nicholas Sparks has a very strong theme about love. Love is a very powerful statement, and when you give your love to someone your lives will be changed forever. Whether it changes in a good way or a bad way is up to the way that you spend your time together. In this book, John has seen a lot of guys in his barracks swear that they are in love, but the relationship falls apart. I thought that it was really sweet how John said that as each day passed by, he loved Savannah more and more, and when he told her that he loved her he REALLY meant it . I guess this leaves me to say that if you believe that anything is possible, love will find it's way to you.

Dear John, by Nicholas Sparks, has become my favorite book. I just finished it, and I cried several times in it. I love this author, and I could hardly put the book down to listen to a teacher talk, or to go on with my daily activities. Dear John is about a boy named John Tyree. He didn't grow up with a mom and his dad was almost nonexistant. All Mr. Tyree cared about was coins. John didn't care about school, and often attended the local bar, Larry's. With no where else to go after graduating, John joined the army. On his first leave back to Willmington, North Carolina, he met the wonderful girl, Savannah working for habitat for humanity when he retreived her purse from the water. They hit it off pretty quick, and were perfect for eachother. They made it through his time back in Germany by writing letters, but when 9/11 happened, he reupped for another two years. The letters this time aren't the same, and he can tell things have changed. She fell in love with another man. When he goes back to see her when his father dies, he realizes she is married, working the job of her dreams, and has a house, but that her husband has cancer. John ends up selling his father's precious coin collection and gives the money to Savannah for Tim's treatment.
In over the two days it took for me to read Dear John, I learned an awful lot about selflessness, and love. I learned, just as John did, that love is when you care for someone elses happiness more than your own. John loved Savannah, and she loved him too, but she was married now. John donating the money from his father's coin collection is a wonderful example of this selflessness. I learned that true love is when you care for them more than yourself, and if the other is happy, that's all that matters.

So adorable! The book shows how some people in the world (very few these days) still don't believe in the looks of people and they don't judge immediately. It also made me cry. The one bad thing about it that makes me give it a lower review is it has a lot of army talk that I don't really understand.

Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. Yes, I am a fan of romantic, sappy books…I believe I take after my mom! I was elated to see one of his books had won the Iowa High School Book Awards. I couldn’t wait to read it! This book was wonderful at keeping me interested. At the end of each chapter, I was enticed to continue read, wanting to know what was going to happen next. I had to force myself to put it down to go to bed.
The story of Dear John takes the reader through a romance between a lifetime army recruit and a young Christian, “the girl-next-door” type. You can see a transformation in John’s character as he falls more in love with Savannah only to be left with a parting letter no one in love wants to get…”Dear John.” John joined the army to help straighten out his rebel ways, as he seemed to be headed down the “wrong” path as he graduated from high school. John falls completely in love with Savannah, but his commitment to the army and being shipped overseas causes Savannah to fall in love with someone else. John as to learn to let her go and be happy that she has found someone that makes her happy. This is so true of “true love;” put someone else’s needs above your own.
One theme I was expecting to read about was how 9/11, a most memorable time in my life, would affect growing relationship between John and Savannah. I have been in a long distance relationship before, but not under the same circumstances. I can only imagine how hard it would be for Savannah wondering how John is doing overseas, anticipating a phone call or letter letting her know that he is doing well. I was surprised to see that Nicholas Sparks didn’t probe the concept of how the war would affect the main characters.
I could see many high school students enjoying this book. There are many themes that can be discussed in a Lit class or book club that surround teens today. For one, 9/11 is the biggest tragedy that has affected their immediate lives. I think that they would have been old enough to remember where they were when the planes hit the towers. Now, students are eligible to sign up for the armed forces. How would this tragedy affect a high schooler’s decision to join a service? This book gives a small glimpse into the camaraderie between service men and women. Another theme is John’s strained relationship with his father, who is later diagnosed as having Asperser’s syndrome by Savannah. Love is another big theme that could be discussed. In today’s society, it seems like many teens think “they fall in love” quickly. Do they really know what love is? Dear John shows that to truly love someone, you need to put their happiness before your own.
