I haven't quite finished THE HISTORIES yet, but I can tell you that if you want to read some lowdown, juicy gossip about ancient rulers and other important types of the 5th Century B.C. Greece, Persia, Egypt and Italy, plus get insights into interesting matters like sexual practices, get this book. Herodotus writes in a way which almost seems contemporary until you start grasping that slavery is taken for granted, as well as the Delphic Oracle predicting the future in riddles.
