I'm not sure I actually reviewed Clan of the Cave Bear on here, I suppose I've read it so many times that it would be just repetitive to me. The series itself is a musing on what happened in the times when Cromagnons and Neanderthals coexisted revolving, on Ayla, a Cromagnon girl raised by a...

I was looking forward to reading this book (book 2 in the Earth's Children series) because I really enjoyed the first volume (Clan of the Cave Bear). However, The Valley of Horses was disappointing. This second volume contained a lot of explicit sex scenes which were annoyingly distracting from the plot. It read like a drug store romance novel. Clan of the Cave Bear had some sexual content, but it was relevant to the plot and character development, and it wasn't overly explicit. In The Valley of Horses, the sex scenes just seemed gratuitous. I did finish the book, but I am unlikely to read any more books in the series.

The series just didn't resonate for me after Clan of the Cave Bear. Then, there was the depiction of light skin and dark skin peoples--I just couldn't get around that.

I looked forward to reading this after I enjoyed Clan of the Cave Bear so much. Unfortunately I couldn't get into it, it just wasn't like the first book. I didn't even finish it. One of the few times I didn't finish a book.
