The end of Ayla's journey with Jondalar across paleolithic Europe brings her to a new journey to fit in with his people; the 'others'. Her innate skills as a healer endear her to many, but her foreign beauty, strange beliefs and open skills as a leader earn her a core of enemies, petty and large. Woven into the story line are the results of years of the author's research into the life of paleolithic man. This is, arguably, the pinnacle of the series.
