“Why do some people believe in curses?”
“Yes there is a sequel. It is called Small Steps.I am going to be reading that one after I finished Holes for the 3rd time.”
“Holes is about a boy names Stanley Yelants, who is accused of stealing a pair of famous shoes. He was sent off to Camp Green for 18 months. Camp Green Lake was a detention center for monors. It was a dried up lake where adolescents were sent to build character by digging holes. Stanley met friends at this camp, some were nice and there were some that were not. Later in the book, Zero, Staanley's friend has run away from camp. Stanley does not know if he is dead or alive. Stanley tries to seak off from the camp in the camp's truck to find Zero. he ends up driving the truck into s hole. he jumps out the truck and taakes off running in the direction as Zero had run earlier. Surprisingly, Stanley finds Zero. They came up with a plan to sneak back to the camp and dig for the hidden treasure. They found it, but they were caught by the camp leaders. The treasure ended up belonging to Stanley yelants. Stanley's lawyer came just in time to take him from the camp. Stanley was not the person that had stolen the shoes after all. Zero was able to go along with them. The camp leaders were arrested for not having a very efficient camp. The characters in the book were mentioned by their nicknames. I loved how Sachar did not reveal the ethnic race of the characters until about 80 pages into the novel. Even after he did, they were not mentioned again, therefore you were able to place a judgement on a particular character because of ethnicity. The story is told in third person. The novel was broken into short chapters, which allowed good breaking points for the reader. One significant detail about the book is that readers may have trouble understanding the shift from the present time in the story to the past. To me the book was very long and drawn out at the beginning. I learned that the best of the bok was yet to come. I would use this book to teach making connections. ”
