I normally hate most memoirs because they are often self-pitying and self absorbed. That isn't the case with this one one because despite the fact that Sebold is dealing with a tragic event in her life she focuses more on the power she found in herself to live through it and is well aware that there are people who suffer more than she has. Each of Sebold's books deal with the aftermath of a violent act and how it effects the people around it. This is tough stuff but she is one of our best and most poignant writers.
